The article is devoted to the consideration of the normative definition of the category of «economic security», as well as existing scientific views on its content. The issue of the relationship between the terms «challenge» and «threat» to economic security is touched upon. The purpose of the article is to develop proposals for amendments to the Economic Security Strategy, which will contribute to achieving a state of security for the national economy and increasing its competitiveness in the context of sustainable development. The methodological basis of the work is presented by both general scientific - analysis, synthesis, and specific scientific (formal-legal) methods of cognition. The result of the article was the definition of a threat to economic security proposed by the author as a set of conditions and factors that lead or may lead to damage to the national interests of the Russian Federation in the economic sphere. In turn, a challenge to economic security should be understood as a set of conditions and factors that create an opportunity to achieve the national interests of the Russian Federation in the economic sphere. A conclusion is made about the need to include in the National Security Strategy sections specifying the content of challenges to economic security and the activities of the state to respond to them.
