Abstract
This study presents a verification of semantic differential data for the emotion zlost’ through an analysis of texts from the fiction and newspaper subcorpora of the Russian National Corpus (RNC). The emotion zlost’ was evaluated by participants using 19 semantic differential scales. The corpus-based analysis confirmed the majority of these characteristics, indicating a stable conceptualization of zlost’ in the minds of native Russian speakers. Differences were also identified in the presence and frequency of zlost’-related characteristics between fiction and newspaper texts. In fictional texts, zlost’ is primarily portrayed as emotional, anxious, and disturbing. In newspaper texts, the most frequent characteristic corresponds to the “destructive – constructive” scale: zlost’ is predominantly framed as a motive for destructive behavior, while constructive interpretations are linked to the concept of “sports anger.” The characteristics of zlost’ found in newspaper texts suggest a tendency toward simplification of this emotion in contemporary media.
