Abstract
The article discusses the status of rhetoric in early medieval English homiletics. Common and different features of Anglo-Saxon rhetoric with Greek and Roman traditions are outlined. Early English Christian authors had a double-sided attitude to rhetoric as a kind of art: notwithstanding their critical estimation of the antique heritage, they borrowed ideas and techniques from there as a basis for their works. The actual and practical value of this article lies in the attempt to structure the results of some studies of evolution of rhetoric in Old English. In addition, the article provides comparative analysis of rhetoric techniques of Anglo-Saxon authors, describes and explains specific features of authors’ individual styles and approaches to the creation of religious texts, involving quotations from original homilies. A certain accent is put on the situations when Anglo-Saxon authors tried to assimilate purely secular situations with religions canons using specific techniques of religious rhetoric.
