Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify materials of the NNPSAC (Nizhny Novgorod Provincial Scientific Archival Commission) related to the activities of the Stroganov family within the Nizhny Novgorod region. Considering that most research on the entrepreneurial activity of the Stroganovs focuses on locations of their saltworks and mining industries (in the territories of presentday Perm Krai and Arkhangelsk region), this work fills a number of gaps in historiography. Unlike previous scholars, our interest was not in the activities and figures of NNPSAC itself, but rather in its scholarly-historical and documentary legacy concerning a single subject - the history of the Stroganov family. To identify these materials, all printed publications under the heading «Proceedings of the NNPSAC» (including meeting journals, document collections, research of commission members, etc.) were reviewed. Documents compiled by the Commission deposited in the Central Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Region were also examined. The main groups of information included data on the Stroganovs’ real estate, peculiarities of their commercial and economic activities, philanthropy, organization of medical institutions, as well as other forms of participation in the social life of the region. This investigation expanded knowledge of the extent of their holdings and established new kinship ties between the Stroganovs and local landowners of Nizhny Novgorod.
