This article is based on the results of a sociological survey carried out among the guardians of orphaned grandchildren in eight cities (including Nizhni Novgorod). The purpose of this research was to study the features of socialization in families where parents were deprived of parental rights and to analyze the life-cycle of a troubled family from its start to the moment when parents were deprived of their rights. In their interviews, guardians talked about how the families of their children were started and then explained the reasons for the breakdown of these families. The consequences of the collapse of young families were tragic: mothers and fathers of the guardians’ grandchildren were deprived of parental rights.
