The article discusses the direction of development of higher pedagogical education in Russia. We assess the risks of the reform of higher pedagogical education and describe the requirements for future school teachers. The required level of theoretical scientific and methodological training of teachers is shown, the leading role of their constructive work in the conditions of modern school is substantiated. The role of classical universities in maintaining and developing the appropriate level of teachers' pedagogical skills is emphasized.
