We examine some changes in marital behavior, problems and effects of cohabitation becoming more common, as well as the attitude of the state in relation to the institution of marriage in connection with current demographic trends. At the present stage of development of Russian society, living together without marriage has become a common phenomenon, which is recognized by the regulatory framework in financial and property matters, for establishing paternity, etc. That is to say that cohabitation has entered the stage of legitimation. However, the results of sociological research in the Vologda region show that most people exhibit attitudes towards cohabitation that are characteristic of the popularization stage and that this form of union has an adverse effect on the implementation of reproductive plans.
