The article analyzes the views of residents of the Russian megalopolis (St. Petersburg) on the symbolic and social significance of the work of teachers of modern Russian Universities collected by the method of narrative interviews. It was found by using social hermeneutics methods that the level of our respondents' hermeneutic knowledge about the symbols of pedagogical work, which is supported by symbolic forms, is extremely low. The relationship between the socio-cultural world and the tradition of the respondents is very weak.
