The authors provide characteristics of the main areas of internationalization of higher education institutions’ functioning in the light of recent developments in the sphere of higher education in Europe and in the world. Much attention is given to the analysis of foreign experience in the process of implementation of internationalization practices at universities, particularly in Germany. The authors highlight some aspects of the process of harmonizing internationalization of Russian universities’ activities with national interests. This is illustrated by the example of the experience of the Voronezh State University in this area.
