Some proposals to improve the structure of mathematical training for chemistry students at the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod are described. Our analysis of this structure was carried out in the course of the work to implement the State Concept of Developing Russian Mathematical Education. A new practice-oriented educational technology (mathematical laboratory practicum for chemists) is suggested. The practicum supports step by step mastering of mathematical and professional competences by solving some specially selected problems of practical significance. This contributes to improving the understanding of mathematical tools and ensures immersion into future professional activity. Some examples of practicum problems are provided.
