A variant of the project-based method for conducting practical and laboratory classes is proposed. It was tested by the author over many years at the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod. Self-training and mutual training of students takes place in small permanent student groups. The project is considered to be completed when every student of the team is equally able to explain the solution of the problem and answer all the questions of the teacher. The efficacy of the project-based instruction method is confirmed by the change of students' attitudes towards learning, their increased motivation to acquire knowledge, the formation of abilities of self-learning and mutual learning, the ability to find optimal ways for solving problems. The practical results of the project-based method include the students' high performance in educational and scientific activities and the development of competences required in their future professional work.
